LENT
A Season of Preparation
Lent is a 40-day season of preparation for Easter and the great 50 days in which we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. We spend 40 days in Lent as his disciples on the journey with Jesus to the cross. We eat less, we drink less, we do less, we think deep thoughts, we grieve, we let the elements of our life that aren’t serving Jesus slowly fall off of us.
Lent is a season where we let parts of ourselves die as we walk with Jesus to his death; we let go of parts of ourselves for the sake of something bigger, something worth more. We open our eyes to the reality of our sin and suffering, to the reality of the world’s suffering.
Why do we do this? Jesus said, “unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24). In Lent we bury some things in the earth, and we pray for Jesus to bring much fruit from them.
