TEACHING

Teaching is the main way we learn together as a community and is an important part of our work to be deeply formed people. Whether it’s Sunday morning sermons or smaller class environments, we seek to be the kind of people who think deep thoughts and ask hard questions.

Deeply formed

We believe we are always being formed—it’s no mistake that you are who you are. Our habits, rhythms, and what we consume form us intentionally and unintentionally. We believe that it is a gift to steward our minds, hearts, and strength in a way that creates room for the Spirit to form us into Christ’s likeness. It takes intentionality and purpose and desire.

Formation at Immanuel takes the form of sermon series, Neighborhood Group discussions, book studies, prayer services, and classes. We follow the liturgical calendar’s 3-year gospel rotation and lean into the gospels in sermons and thematically throughout the year. Within that structure, we lean into five pathways to deep formation: contemplative living, racial reconciliation, internal examination, sexual wholeness, and missional presence.

PREACHING

St. Paul writes in Romans 10:17, “Faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.” We believe that teaching and preaching have always been central to the gathering of Christians as has the practice of the Lord’s Supper (Acts 2:42-47). As Anglicans we follow a prescribed reading plan called “The Lectionary” which gives us the Bible passages that are read and taught each week at Immanuel.

Our sermons are released weekly through Immanuel’s podcast which you can follow using the link below…

 CLASSES

Classes are smaller teaching environments in which we go deeper into a topic or text. We follow an annual formation calendar that is made up of classes covering theology, Bible study, emotional health, social justice, human sexuality, and more.

  • Foundations Class

    • In this 6-week class, we study the basics of the faith through the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the 10 Commandments. This is for anyone who would like to know more about the Christian faith, as well as anyone who would like to be baptized or become a member at Immanuel.

This class is held each year during the Lenten season and you can register HERE.

  • Membership Class

    • In this 3-week class, we explore the culture, values, and practices of Immanuel. This includes a deep dive in what it means to be Anglican and how we live this out in our context. The Membership and Foundations classes are both required to be a member at Immanuel and they are offered at least once a year.

We also host other one-time classes and you can find out details about all upcoming class opportunities HERE.
